The book is set in the summer of 1899. A young boy spots a lone man riding into the small Montana town where has family and he have recently moved. The stranger, Shane, stops at the boy's (Bob Starrett) home to refresh himself from his long journey. Since the weather outlook is poor, Shane accepts their invitation to stay.
